As loyal supporters of the Tangotrøyene, we've all experienced both the joy of bright moments and the frustration of less successful periods in recent weeks. Aalesund has demonstrated a solid foundation, yet the crucial consistency is missing to truly establish themselves at the top of the League. It’s time to take a closer look at what’s happening on the pitch and what small but effective adjustments can lift us.
Defensively, we’ve observed a tendency for opponents to find unexpected space, particularly during the transition phase. The midfield unit sometimes appears overly eager in their pursuit of the ball, opening up large corridors for counter-attacks through the centre. Our wing-backs, who are crucial in our offensive play, occasionally find themselves isolated when opposing teams exploit the wide areas on the flanks. This forces our centre-backs to cover larger areas, increasing the risk of one-on-one situations or opponents delivering dangerous crosses. Furthermore, our defensive set-pieces have seemed somewhat vulnerable, with missed clearances or markings costing us dearly.
Offensively, there have been periods of excellent passing play and good intentions, but the final third has often lacked that crucial extra touch. We create chances, yes, but efficiency in front of goal has been inconsistent. Our attacking play at times appears too predictable, with too few runs into the space behind the defense or unpredictable combinations that could split an established backline. Centrally in attack, we might be missing the constant movement that draws defenders out of position and creates space for others. This makes it easier for opponents to organize themselves and deny us access to the most dangerous areas.
So, what steps can be taken to reverse this trend? On the defensive side, it is suggested to implement a clearer “screen” in front of the defense. This can be achieved by assigning one of the central midfielders a more distinct role as an anchor, prioritizing breaking up play and protecting deep spaces, especially during transitions. This will allow our wing-backs greater freedom to push forward, knowing there is cover behind them. Furthermore, the pressing intensity and triggers from the midfield unit should be more coordinated to prevent the midfield from becoming too spread out. It would also be beneficial to drill fixed routines for defensive set-pieces, with clear marking assignments and responsibilities.
Offensively, we need to work on varying our attacking patterns. More unpredictability is key. This could include more frequent positional changes among the attacking players, as well as more deep runs from midfield to exploit spaces when the striker drops deep or drifts wide. Exploiting the space in behind with quick through balls can be a powerful weapon, especially against teams that play a high line. And crucially, more focus on crossing quality and the "second wave" of players arriving in the box. Increased emphasis on finishing drills under pressure will also be vital to convert created chances into goals.
There’s no doubt that the quality exists within the squad. With these tactical fine-tunings, the Tangotrøyene can once again find the flow required to dominate matches and truly challenge in the League. Small adjustments can often lead to significant outcomes, and this is precisely what we hope to see from our boys at Stadium in the coming weeks. Forward, Tangotrøyene!
